We must assume from this report that no specific charge was brought with regard to the regular sexual intercourse between Hussamettin and the mule.
Turkey although an Islamic country does not adhere to "Islamic Law" as practised in many other countries in the region. Under Islamic law the penalty for Sodomy with an animal is death.
This does raise a few interesting questions. If we take the case a few hundred kilometres south we find that the wife would have no right to request a divorce from her husband. It also raises the probability that she would never reveal her husband's particular sexual leanings because firstly it would mean admitting that her husband, given the choice between having sex with her and a mule, had chosen the latter, and also she would lose her bread winner in a country where paid work for women is frowned upon.
Kinsey during the late 1940's found that some 17% farm boys of college age had had at least one animal sexual experience to orgasm. Among this group were those who had only done it once and quite a few who admitted to regular sex with horses, mules, donkeys, cows, sheep, and just about anything else to be found in the average farmyard.
General body contact was most commonly reported by women, whereas men were more likely to have masturbated the animals. Oral genital contacts, involving the animal's mouths and the human genitals, were reported by both sexes, but coitus with animals although common among men was very rare among women.
This post war period was very conservative. Girls were expected to save themselves for marriage and a brave new world and were therefore unavailable. A more permissive attitude would not dawn for another ten years with the coming of rock and roll, and the swinging sixties would find most of these young men in settled middle age. Or Vietnam!
A German survey conducted in 1989 covering some 3000 adults yielded the following: 3 % of men admitted to having had sex with animals as against only 2 % of women, the figures are similar when asked whether in certain situations they would consider sex with an animal as a matter of choice.
It is clearly questionable how reliable these figures are but we should not be surprised that they differ so markedly from Kinsey. The sample is much broader and not confined to "Farm Boys". Modern intensive farming methods do not offer the same opportunities as rural America in the '40s when many of his subjects reported group encounters with animals, they knew it was wrong, but the taboo was probably weakened by peer pressure. The fact that Kinseys group were aware that they were not alone in this practise probably contributed to a greater degree of honesty, the biggest taboos are always those that you can never imagine anyone else wanting to do!
We could then speculate that it is probably much harder today, when such practices almost certainly take place in isolation, among people who are well aware of the penalties both legal and social that pertane if caught. The percentages as given have an error of a few points. I find it impossible that even though anonymous replies were also processed anyone would give a false positive reaction to this question.
It should be noted that no questions were offered as to an "interest in bestiality". Luckily this question is fairly easy to answer from the size of the Animal market in Holland and elsewhere where such material is freely available. After many conversations with owners of sex shops on this very issue I offer the following completely unscientific statistics. Nearly half of Europe's males if informed that a lady was performing a sex act with a donkey next door and that entry was free would fight their way past you so as not to miss a minute of the show. If the show were a man with a cow however the number would probably drop to below two procent.
Kinsey did find in a later survey that few women were interested in animal sex. Interest here being defined as without any outside influences. It would seem likely that more men than women are regular practitioners of this particular branch of the tree of Eros, although more men than women are interested in female/animal encounters.
To test this theory I sent a short questionair to those persons who advertise animal sex in certain contact magazines. I had asked how many letters each had received and what was requested. Most letters came from married couples seeking dogs or donkeys for the female half, but not one of these letters was written by the woman, and it is probable that some men had not even informed their partners.
Information from 5 advertisers revealed in total some 50 replies had been sent, note I did not see the letters or even ask the identity of the advertisers as I wanted honest information.
One single woman replied who was apparently quite genuine and really entertained the donkey. She like many others had, I suspect, replied to more than one of my sample, but without the original letters this is hard to prove.
A professional lady who puts on displays with a dog and asks in her advert for couples but reveals that she also considers responses from single men reported 32 replies. 25 of these were from single men who were happy to pay a considerable sum to see her in action. The other seven were from couples with their own dogs. She apparently prefers these active "scene" members and requests no money from them.
Male respondents who were wanted active contact with an animal made up only 5 from the 50. 3 were really optimistic homosexuals who wished to be buggered by a dog or horse, none were accepted. And 2 gentlemen who were hoping to have sex with a mare or cow no advertiser was in possession of the said beasts although one revealed that they may get a pony mare and give a positive response in the future.
The relatively limited number of male respondents would seem to fly in the face of the available statistics which all show that they are in the majority.
I propose that for one it is much easier for them to practise their particular form of bestiality without assistance, and do not then find it necessary to respond to such advertisements. Single sex is a difficult and maybe dangerous feat for a lady who seeks the company of stallions. Suitable animals are comparatively rarely found in fields whereas the male seeker has any number of unattended cows or horses to chose from when working alone. The risks for a man revealing himself to an advertiser are also higher, he would almost certainly receive a sterner sentence if exposed. Women tend to attract a "nudge, nudge she's a real goer that one, does it with horses" sort of response, for a man in the same situation the most probable response is one of total social rejection and the label "Disgusting Pervert". He could hardly expect any support even from those who share his sexual slant, in fact in order to protect their own secret they would almost certainly be the first to point the finger!!
The only other indicator available to us is those cases which reach court. These involve 99% male defendants with the other 1% being made up mostly of women who were forcibly raped by dogs with the help of several men, one such case involving German engineers working in Africa and a prostitute happened as recently as 1989 .
In conclusion then, a comparatively large proportion of th population have had a sexual experience to the point of climax with an animal, but as a percentage of the total sexual outlets in the population it disapears into insignificance. Ladys and gentelmen whose only sexual release comes through sodomy are, and always have been, extremely rare.

Bestiality, just the word is enough to arouse many, disgust some, and raise a certain amount of curiosity in most people.
Sex with animals is the last great taboo subject. Heterosexual behaviour has been studied and written about fairly openly since the pioneering work of Marie Stopes in the 1930's. Homosexuality was legalised in most European countries in the 1960's and 70's, with the exception of the Irish Republic. The Eighties brought recognition and open debate in Newspapers and on Television of Child Sexual Abuse.
To the question as to why this book should be written I give only the excuse that with the possible exception of one very rare book of which only 500 were ever printed no other book deals exclusively with this most unnusual subject. The book ,"Etude sur la Bestialité", is French from 1905 and even I have not seen it!
Another French writer who uses the Nom de Plume "Jacobus X" includes many interesting items in his books many of which contain a chapter on animal sex. I will be borrowing from his writings but I have found that as the subject is so rare we very often have found the same material .... even though we write a Century apart.
Why such literature should be more common in France is an interesting question. As we shall see later compared with other European countries which were locking people up for decades at the turn of the Century for animal offences, in France, as with all sexual offences a more liberal attitude seems to have prevailed.
A certain acceptance of the sexual connotations of the beast has never been lost from ancient times as in other parts of the world. Even today you are much more likely to see an explict scene of animals mating in a French erotic film than elsewhere.
In wildlife documentaries they never shrink from showing reproductive behaviour in all it's glory, compare this with American items which still carry a total ban on TV sex scenes to the extent that a sex specific film was released some years ago to cover this ommosion using tasteful long shots. It received an x certificate and was a commercial success. In 1991 a film appeared in France with a "General Release" certificate which could only be described as "Hard Core" animal mating complete with screen filling close-ups and slow motion ejaculations.
However for specific human/animal sex films one has to look to Scandanavia and Holland as they are banned everywhere else.
Kinsey's definition of "Human/Animal Sex Contacts" is the one I have taken as a starting point. This includes the more general view of the man or woman performing intercourse with an animal but also includes the whole spectrum of stroking, riding, oral genital relations etc.. I extend this to include those people who need no contact to experience a deegree of sexual pleasure, it would be stupid to say that someone whose passion is massively aroused at the sight of animals mating, of which there are many, or even those who prefer film of bestiality itself are not directly "involved" in the subject before us, even though no "contact" need have taken place.
Now to an older definition: "Definition of Bestiality. Bestiality is any intercourse, through the genital or other channels of the man and woman, with a living being not of his or her own species. This definition, thus widened, includes a generality of cases; not only the anal or vaginal coition of the man with a male or female beast, the counterpart of the lascivious woman or of the passive man- pederasts, but also the labial pollutions to which certain animals are trained."
pederast= man who submits to anal intercourse with a male animal labial pollutions = oral sex performed by an animal on a human.
Dr. Jacobus X.. Abuses Aberations and Crimes of the Genital Sense (1901)
It has been a subject for artists since prehistoric times. A cave painting dating from at least 8000 BC was discovered in the Camonica Valley in Northern Italy depicting a man complete with full erection standing behind a female deer. The viewer is left in no doubt that he intends to have sex with her.
We clearly cannot say if our prehistoric artist depicts himself, or something which he has observed someone else doing. What we can deduce however is that he has an intimate knowledge of the external sexual organs of this animal, and that it was made before any known taboos against sex with animals existed.
The hunting methods at this time almost certainly included driving the herds of wild deer into blind canyons or caves, many would then, finding no escape, be tightly packed together, frozen and shivering with fear at this strange situation, heads facing into the trap, and presenting their hindquarters to the victorious men. Our hypothetical hunter band, who may have been hunting for days or weeks would then have ample opportunity to celebrate their success and release some of their sexual frustrations on their victims.
Much ancient literature speaks of sex with animals. It was known to the Ancient Greeks, the Romans, and although relatively few of the Ancient Egyptian writings have survived, one 3200 year old papyrus shows that it was well known to them.
Herodotus mentions the goats of the Egyptian temple at mendes which were specially trained for copulating with human beings.
The casual nature with which depictions of bestiality in ancient Roma culture were handled really only first came to light in the middle of the Eighteenth century with the discovery of Pompeii.
At the time of their discovery all of the more salacious artifacts were kept hidden from public view and accessible to a few rich gentlemen in what became known as the "Secret Museum". The finest piece, a marble statue of a satyr with a goat, has become infamous, and even today it is not openly displayed and one must ask to see it.
A female goat lies, apparently willingly, on her back. Her hind legs are wide apart and the Satyr leans forward between them gently grasping her left front leg with his hand. The penis of this mythical beast is that if a goat, long, but fairly thin. The piece is the work of a master at his craft, the genital organs, the Satyr has penetrated her but not yet deeply, are beautifully rendered. The whole scene is one not of rape, but of gentle love making. Early written evidence of the prevalence of zoophilia is best gleaned from it's prohibition. There is no point in making laws against something that doesen't happen, and yet in Leviticus XX,15 we find a specific law "And if any woman approach unto any beast, and lie down thereto, thou shalt kill the woman, and the beast: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."
The Hitite code also forbids sexual intercourse between men and animals, and the talmud, just for safety extends this prohibition to women!
"At Rome, serpents, which were brought up to the temple of sculapius, or kept in certain houses as the objects of pleasure for the matrons, seved, according to various commantators, for extra-natural intercourse, for which they were specially trained. It appears from a passage in Suetonius that Atia, the Mother of Augustus, was defiled by a serpent one night when she was sleeping in the temple of Apollo.
I read how Atia, one midnight when she had arrived to attend the customary festival of Apollo, had her litter set down in the Temple, and following the example of the other matrons present, went off to sleep;how a serpent then glided suddenly into her sleeping place, and presently emerged again, and on how awaikening next morning she purified herself as if after intercourse with her husband. Directly afterwards we are told, a mark appeared on her body, showing the figure of a serpent, and could never be effaced, the result being that she presently ceased to frequent the public baths, and never resumed the habit" (Vita Augusti)
The Roman women, accoring to Juvenal, sought after asses.
Herodotus informs us that in his lifetime a he-goat had commerce in public with a woman in Egypt, and that this adventure was known to everybody, without any disagreable consequences resulting to the woman. The Egyptians excused this crime under the persuasion that the God Pan having metamorphasised himself into a he-goat, there was nothing extraordinary in his vouchsafing his favours to the women in question.
The matter would obtain the more credence, because in the language of the time, the god and the animal were called Mendes.
The shepherds of Virgil's time did not stand on ceremony with their she-goats: a quote from Plutarch,
Wherein you Nature, though it be the law to aid it, cannot restrain your intemperence within the bounds of reason, as though it were a torrent which bears it away by force, it commits very frequently and in many places great outrages, disorders and scandals against nature, in the matter of this pleasure of love; for their are men who have loved she-goats,sows and mares.
The best known story is that of Pasiphae, who conceived an inordinate passion for a bull of dazzling whiteness, and from this infamous traffic was born the Minotaur half bull half man.
Juvenal, in the Mysteries of the Bona Dea, describes lewd manners of the Roman ladies.
With their limbs stained red with wine, they struggle in the tilts of Venus. The tribade, Laufulla, challanges the girls from the brothels. Inssatiable and unwearied, she compels them to cry for mercy under her caresses. Then she abandons herself to the tribade, Messalina, whome she adores, and who fastens herself to her flanks. From all parts of the cave rises the same cry "Men,Men!" this is the moment. Each matron runs after her lover. If he is in bed, let him try only to cover himself with a mantle, and flee!
If the lovers are absent, let them take the slaves of the house to supply their place. If these have fled let them hire water- carriers at any price. For want of men, the woman who is not provided accepts an ass.
In the middle ages, bestiality was as widely spread, if not more so, than in ancient times. The men-at-arms indulged in it everywhere they went, and all animals were good alike for their passion;mares, sows, sheep or poultry. When these companies were on the march, historians tell us, they were followed by a herd of she-goats richly caparisoned and reserved for the chiefs and their freinds. Thanks to the contagion of example, the vice became general.
It is not therefore surprising to find in all the theological works, recommendations to confessors to put questions to penitents relating to bestiality. And when it was a member of the clergy who had indulged in bestial coition, the following scale of punishment was imposed. A priest who sins with a beast makes a pennance for ten years, a vicar for five, a deacon three, and a clerk two.
Bestiality is permitted to Mohammedans. In certain Eastern countries, principally in Syria, Egypt, and in Africa generally, bestiality is still very common, and is not regarded with all the horror that it inspires in Europe. It is all a matter of manners, temperament, and customs.
Moreover, bestiality is permitted to Mohammedans, if we may believe Dr Paul de Regla. Having thus said, I must speak of cases where, following several doctors who in this have conformed to the advice of celebrated physicians, it is permissable to commit fornication with animals of large size, such as the she-goat, the mule etc. These cases are in the purely medical province, and cannot be put into practice but as a curative means, and in the interests of health alone. It is thus allowable to commit forniaction with female animals when a man is suffering with simple or syphilitic gonorrhea, with violent inflamations of the Thakar, and with other affections not presenting ulcers, chancres, or any sort of wounds.
Experience has shown that, under the influence of this fornication, the man gets rid of the virus which is the cause of these diseases, without its being contracted by the animal, for the virus is immediately annihilated by the great heat which lies in the animal's vulva, and by the acid qualities of the secretions of its mucous membranes (Paul de Regla,al Ktab).
P. de Regla says that this is the natural explanation of the numerous cases of betiality which, at the beginning of our Algerian conquests, so frequently brough Arabs before our courts of justice. The Arabs, surprised for the most part in our cavalry stables in the very act of bestiality, seemed greatly astonished at the punishments inflicted upon them. For a long time, no credit was given to their assertion, but at length, when enquiry was made, it had to be recognized that this was a theraputic means, and not of the genital sense.
Bestiality a Vice of our Times. (1901)
Without being as widespread as among the Ancients or in the Middle Ages, it is undeniable that bestiality is not uncommon. It is met with in Cavalry regiments, and in country districts among ass-drivers and muleteers; but is is above all shepherds, swineherds,goat-herds,cow- herds and tenders of geese and turkeys etc. who indulge in the bestial act with the animals which they tend. Theere are few villages where there is not one of those degraded beings known by a name employed to designate their foul tastes." Dr. Jacobus X.. Abuses Aberations and Crimes of the Genital Sense (1901)
A well known woodcut dating back to the Later Han dynasty (25-220AD) depicts "Punishment by Horse Cock". This execution method was reserved for unfaithful concubines and wives of the Emperor. Overseen by Eunuchs, who were responsible for all palace punishments, the stallion i encouraged to mount and the "executioner" guides his lubricated member into the victims vagina. Without any restriction being placed upon his passions the long powerful thrusts of the beast ensure instant agony followed by a long and painful death from internal injuries. Hopefully this prospect encouraged faithfulness as the suffering involved can hardly be overstated.
This plate dating from about 700 AD shows two of America's first inhabitants long before the arrival of the white man engaged in sex with a deer. Perspective is not a strong point of primitive artists but the picture does display a refreshing honesty. One man holds the deer by the horns while another prepares to penetrate her.
In 14th century china the historian Hsu Ying-Ch'iu reports that one day two jealous concubines attempted to murder prince Ch' 's favourite girl. The intended victim was offered the opportunity to select the punishment of her would be assassins.
Hsu Ying-Ch'iu reports: "Ti-u and Ch'ao-p'ing (the murderous concubines) were taken to the public square, stripped of their robes and staked to the ground in a kneeling position. Rams, goats, and even dogs were encouraged to mount them, the efforts of which greatly pleased the watching Kao-hsin(the prince's favourite)"
In Northern India is a Hindu Temple city with walls which are covered in thousands of reliefs. Every sexual position which is conceivable is exquisitely portrayed. Among them, men and women performing every imaginable sexual act with horses, elephants, etc.
The middle ages saw the inquisition which was much concerned with the subject before us. Many were condemned to a gruesome death at the hands of these monsters for coupling with animals, a sure sign of witchcraft. Some of the cases were undoubtedly genuine but many were the result of endless torture until a confession could be forced out of an often innocent victim. A birthmark on a newborn child which roughly resembled any animal was seen as definitive proof of a bestial father's sexual union with the accused. Almost every National archive of this time contains quite astonishing numbers of bestiality cases, with the associated burnings and hangings of the accused and their bestial consorts.
In 1514 an enterprising producer staged a most successful show in Florence which consisted of nothing except mating animals. Apparently many gentlemen brought their fiances to witness this spectacle of raw animal potency.
In 1501 Lucrecia Borgia and her Father Pope Alexander VI arranged an entertainment which consisted of two big farm mares being covered by four stallions in turn in what must have been something of an equine gang bang. Each horse having ejaculated, being spurred on to more lustful efforts by the sight of his companions performances in this private show.
It was not uncommon for the upper classes to see no contradiction in arranging such entertinments and even wild orgies for themselves whil punishing almost any breach of faithful monogamos marriage among the lower orders with the utmost brutality. The entire master servent relationship of the time was supported by the church in selected sermons stressing that God had given each person a place in the world. If one happened to be born a serf, no more than a slave in practice, then that was God's will also.
In order to keep alive the image of Satan, the perversions of the lower orders were cited as evidence of his real influence, and of course the poor farmer whose intimacy with his housecow was discovered was burned as an example of both the existence of Satan and the power of the ecclesiastical/aristocratic alliance. Meanwhile members of the clergy/aristocracy entertained themselves in private with every kind of sexual entertainment.
In Seventeenth century England the countess of Pembroke arranged tha all her mares were to be covered in front of the house. They were turned that she could watch the stallion's huge member ravish the mare while several strong men held her steady. Aubry in his famous book "Brief Lives" reports "and then she would act the same sport herself, with her stallions!"
Today in Toba, Japan is a "Sex Museum" where animals form an important part of the displays. When it was founded, in order to overcome the Japanese taboo against the display of explicit human sexual intercourse, most of the exhibits were life sized depictions of animals mating. A cow and Bull frozen in a passionate embrace greet the visitor. All around eerily lifeless beasts all at the point of climax stand rigid, horses, zebras, deer, apes, every large mammal you can think of.
These displays still remain an important part of the museum but have been augmented by human/animal models, also life sized. Leda and the Swan is particularly well crafted. Small monkeys, an important spiritual symbol in the Shinto religion are seen embracing not only each other but also rather western looking young ladies. The rest of the tableaux consist of scenes of extreme violence and torture, still a major part of the Japanese psyche but one which need detain us no further.
In Amsterdam very prominently placed on the main thoroughfair from Central Station to the Dam Square is also a Sex Museum. This particular establishment cannot compare with Toba for size but it makes up for this with the quality of its exhibits. It has probably the first commercial bestiality publication of the modern era. A special edition of "Candy" dating from the early 70's.
Many fine drawings, miniatures, and sculptures which are relevant to this book can be seen, including a (rather poor) copy of the famous Pompeii goat and satyr. In another room are poster sized pictures from modern hard core bestiality films. For us perhaps the most valuable exhibit is a sword which was presented to a former King of Belgium. The hilt is an exquisitely carved scene in Ivory of a Man with full erection pursuing a rather angry looking wild sow. It adds a whole new meaning to having a days pig sticking!!.
